Class description

This class focuses on recreating the visual effect of traditional Japanese raku pottery on a gourd. Raku involves firing pottery at low temperatures and then quickly removing it from the kiln and placing it into sawdust or other combustible materials, resulting in a unique, often crackled or iridescent surface. The "faux" aspect means achieving this look without a kiln and the traditional raku firing process, using texture, paint, inks, or other finishes to mimic the effects. Come explore this unique art technique of layering in many colors to achieve the look of raku pottery! Each oil lamp will be completely unique and functional. All levels of gourd artists are welcome in this class.

The instructor will provide:

  • Prepped Gourd that is ready to start this project
  • An oil lamp insert
  • An assortment of metallic acrylic paint
  • Sponges
  • Finishing sealer spray
  • A tutorial

What you are asked to bring

Students need to bring:

  • Small bowl to hold water
  • Sea sponges (I will have sponges to share if you don't have.)
  • Optional: Apron to protect your clothing
