Class description

 

In this class, you will be able to practice your carving and learn the art of applying eggshell mosaic on your gourd. I will help you create your design, based on the size and shape of your gourd. In the morning you'll design and carve your gourd. Then in the afternoon you will learn how to color and apply the eggshells creating a mosaic effect. The result will be your own, unique creation!

This class is for all levels of gourders. However, all students need to at least be comfortable using their rotary tools. Depending on your level of expertise, you might not completely finish in the amount of time allotted, but you will have the supplies to finish at home.

I will supply pattern samples, eggshells, paint cups, acrylic inks, glue, and sealer.

What you are asked to bring

Bring the following:

​

• A cleaned, 6" to 8" wide, thick-walled, class-ready gourd. If you want an opening in your gourd, cut and clean the inside prior to class. (Consider an opening that has an unusual shape as in the sample picture, but make sure your hands fit inside if you choose to add a mosaic piece inside.)

• Your mosaic design ideas - I will have some simple drawings for ideas, but if you have your own ideas, please bring them!

• Pencil with good eraser

• Tweezers

• X-acto Knife

• Rotary tool with all bits (including sanding/smoothing bits and a small cutting wheel-about 1/8"

• A dust mask is required in carving classes

• Eye glasses or safety glasses are required in carving classes

• Ear protection is optional

• An apron or big shirt to protect your clothes is optional

NOTES:

About the instructor

 

Art has always been a part of Lynne’s life. Her very creative parents made sure that she was exposed to different forms of art from early on. That gave her an open path to explore her creativity. Lynne has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from California College of Arts and Crafts and is the owner of Lynne M East Graphic Design Studio and Blue Raven Art School. In recent years she has been applying her design expertise to gourd art and basket weaving and encaustic painting. Having learned many new techniques, she now creates pieces unlike any others. Lynne enjoys combining media and often adds metal art to her pieces.
