Class description

 

Learn my tips and tricks for using polymer clay to decorate your gourd art.

 ​

Although this class has an abundance of learning opportunities, the main focus is for you to learn how to use polymer clay to embellish and enhance your gourd projects. Along the way, I will share with you how to make texture paste--using products that most of us already have in our workshops. And I'll teach you how to use the "dry brushing" technique to add depth to your textured background.  

This class is for all levels of gourders but how far along you will get on this project will depend on your level of expertise. That being said, I think students should be able to finish.

I will supply a 5-6", cut and cleaned gourd along with everything you'll need with the exception of the items specified in the "What You Need to Bring" section below. In addition, you will be given a class tutorial, and I will also give you a basic clay extrusion tool set that is yours to keep!

 

What you are required to bring

​

• A large, soft-bristle brush for base coating the bowl

• A few medium and small detail brushes

• A heat tool (or hair dryer)

• A flexible ruler--one side of your ruler should be metric 

• A palette knife

• An X-acto knife with sharp blade

• Scissors

• Pencil with good eraser

 

Note: When working with clay, long nails can get in your way. It might be easier to clip your nails before working with clay products.

If this class does not meet its minimum number of students by August 30, the class will be cancelled, you will be contacted, and your registration fee will be refunded.

About the instructor

 

Patti Jo Newsom is an active member of the American Gourd Society, Co-founder and Co-chair of the Nevada Gourd Society, Webmaster of the Nevada Gourd Society, and Director of the Pahrump Valley Gourd Patch. She is a certified Gare instructor and over the years she has experimented with a variety of artistic design techniques, painting on canvas, wood, and ceramics. For the past 15 years she has concentrated on her gourd art and teaching classes for those who want to learn her techniques.
